By the end, you’ll have downloaded an asset from a share email and from a client portal, and know why some downloads are only a preview or aren’t offered.

Before you start

  • A share email or a client portal invitation from a studio.
  • For a portal: its password, from the invitation email.

WRITTEN GUIDE

Save what the studio sent you.

Northstar Creative sent Maya Chen at Harbor & Pine work in two ways: an asset shared by email, and delivered assets in the project’s client portal. Here she downloads from both.

You get what the studio allowed: the full file, a preview or a watermarked copy. You don’t need an account. Open a share email or a client portal invitation to follow along.

  1. 01

    Open the share email

A share email tells you what you can do with the asset, here view and download. Choose View Shared Asset, and confirm your email with the code we send you. That step is in Find files that were shared with you earlier.

  2. 02

    Download, then Original

The asset opens. Choose Download. Original is the full file the studio shared. Below it, Formats offers the same image in other file types.

Choose Original, and it saves to your downloads.

  3. 03

    Open the client portal email

A client portal comes by email too, with its password. Choose Open client portal, then sign in with that password and your email address. Signing in is in Review work your creative team sent you.

  4. 04

    Portal home

The portal lists the assets the studio delivered. Open one.

  5. 05

Download this version, then Source file

Under Download this version, Source file is the full file. Display image is only a preview. Choose Source file to save it.

If the studio shared only a preview or a watermarked copy, that’s what you’ll get. No download option? The studio hasn’t allowed downloads.

In short: in a share, choose Download, then Original. In a portal, choose Source file. You always get what the studio allowed.

Check the result

  • From a share email, you chose Download, then Original.
  • In a client portal, you opened a delivered asset and chose Source file under Download this version.
  • The files are in your downloads.

If it didn’t work

There’s no download option.

The studio hasn’t allowed downloads for this share or portal. Ask them if you need the file.

The file I downloaded is smaller or has a watermark.

If the studio shared only a preview or a watermarked copy, that’s what you get. Ask the studio for the original if you need it.

What’s the difference between Source file and Display image?

Source file is the full file. Display image is only a preview.
