Keep every cut of a campaign video
in one asset.

A campaign video comes in several cuts, and as separate files they drift apart and get mistaken for duplicates.

By the end, the master and every cut sit in one asset, and each cut keeps its own versions and its own current version.

Before you start

  • A master asset, such as a 16:9 campaign video.
  • The file of each cut you want to add, such as a 1:1 or 9:16 export.

WRITTEN GUIDE

One asset for the master and every cut.

The Northstar bottle launch spot has a 16:9 master and a square cut for social. Both live in one asset. Now the team needs a vertical cut for stories, and it goes into the same asset as a new variant.

Open the asset in your workspace to follow along. A variant is a different cut: another crop, language or creative direction. A version is a revision of one variant. Neither counts as a duplicate.

  1. 01

    The master asset

Open the asset. The 16:9 master and its square cut are one asset, not two.

  2. 02

    Open Files & versions

In the panel on the right, open Files & versions. It shows how many variants the asset has, for example 2 variants.

The Original is the Source variant: the master the asset was created with. A cut you added, such as Square 1:1, is a Custom variant.

  3. 03

    Versions per variant

Each variant keeps its own versions and its own current version. Here, the square cut reads “Custom variant · 2 versions”: V2, which adds an end title, is marked Current, and V1 stays in its history.

  4. 04

    Watch a cut

Select a version to watch it in the viewer, for example V2 of the square cut.

  5. 05

    Add a new cut

Choose Add file. In Add a file, choose what you’re adding:

    • New version adds a revision to a variant you pick, the Original included.
    • New variant adds a different cut.

Choose New variant, type the Variant name, for example Vertical 9:16, and choose the file. The dialog says the new cut starts with V1 as its current version. Choose Create variant.

  6. 06

    The new variant

The asset now has 3 variants. The new cut is processed like any upload. When it’s ready, select its V1 to watch it: the same asset, now with a vertical cut.

In short: one asset holds every cut. The Original is the source variant, each cut you add is a custom variant, and every variant keeps its own versions. For how versions work, see Keep file revisions together with version history. To see which cut another asset matches, see See which cut of another asset matches yours. For sending revisions to a client, see How revisions work, for your team and your client.

Check the result

  • Files & versions shows the Original as the Source variant and each cut as a Custom variant.
  • Each variant lists its own versions, with one marked Current.
  • The new cut was added with Add file › New variant, and it starts at V1.

If it didn’t work

Should a new export be a new version or a new variant?

A version is a revision of one variant, such as the square cut with an added end title. A variant is a different cut: another crop, language or creative direction.

Will the cuts show up as duplicates of each other?

No. Variants and versions of the same asset are never listed as duplicates of each other.

Which variant does a new version go to?

The one you choose. With New version, you pick the variant, the Original included. The other variants keep their own current version.
